3 Quick Moving Tips Everyone Should Know

Moving can be very hectic and stress inducing if you are not prepared. If you are moving for the first time or it has been a while since you moved – here are some quick tips you should know.

Start Early

When it comes to moving, the earlier you can start planning and packing – the better. Depending on how many things you have accumulated over the years, it may take a while to pack. Plus, a lot of people like to start as fresh as possible and sort through their items before packing. If you start early enough, you can get stuff off to donation or sell things in a garage sale or online. By doing this, you can get rid of things that you have not used in awhile that have just been taking up space. Plus, as a bonus, you might be able to get a little extra money out of the deal to put toward moving costs.

Get Organized

Organization is extremely important to a stress free move. Make to-do lists and split them up among the members of your family. Make sure to note all aspects of the move. Things such as:

  • Turning on utilities, internet, etc. at new place, and disconnecting services at old place
  • Comparing and booking a moving service or getting a portable storage container
  • Materials you might need – labels, tape, boxes, bubble wrap, etc.
  • Notifying the post office, creditors and other important people of your address change

By keeping organized and delegating responsibilities you can get a lot done in a short amount of time without missing anything.

Get Creative With Packing

You don’t have to go out and purchase all new packing materials if you are strapped for cash. Use things around the house like towels or clothes to wrap around breakables. If you have one or more suitcases, you can pack things like books or other odds and ends in them.

If you don’t have many things in your home that can be used as packing material, there are other ways that you can save money on packing supplies. Check on your local Nextdoor app or Craigslist – a lot of people give away boxes and bubble wrap after their own moves. There are also stores that sell used boxes at a severely reduced rate. It is also worth checking with your moving company – as oftentimes they give out a certain number of free boxes to their customers.

Moving can be a stressful time, but it doesn’t have to be. With preparation and a little creativity you can have an efficient and hassle free move.
